Miller Environmental Group Participates in High Path Avian Flu “Research Day”

Miller Environmental Group, Inc. (MEG) recently participated in a Highly Path Avian Flu (HPAI) Research Day in Lancaster County, PA. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture hosted the event, and had Dr. David Wolfgang, Director of the Bureau of Animal Health and Diagnostic Services Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, discussing biosecurity and permitting requirements in an HPAI Control Area. Dr. Wolfgang also discussed how the 3D operations inclusive of Depopulation, Disposal, and Decontamination would be handled during an Avian Flu event. MEG is contracted with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture to support their needs for any potential disease outbreak. “Miller Environmental Group has been instrumental as we coordinate and organize our HPAI Preparedness program here in the Commonwealth of PA”, commented Greg Hostetter, Deputy Secretary for Animal Health and Food Safety of the PA Department of Agriculture.

Gary Humphreys, Regional Manager, Mid-Atlantic Region of MEG, displayed some of the response and decontamination equipment and demonstrated the ability to decontaminate personnel, equipment and facilities where Hazardous Materials or Infectious Substances have been released. Gary also discussed MEG’s experience with a wide spectrum of similar projects including responses to threats of Anthrax, Botulism, Bloodborne Pathogens, Corrosives, Flammables, and Organics. The equipment MEG displayed included vacuum trucks, decontamination trailers, traffic control equipment, and portable water storage. Dr. Gregory Martin of the Penn State Extension also demonstrated how depopulation would be handled using foam.
